Jim Carrey Hollywood film star and comedian may be facing trial over the death of former girlfriend make-up artist Cathriona White.
This comes as a Los Angeles judge on Wednesday refused to dismiss two wrongful death lawsuits against him pending more investigation. Cathriona White 30, died from an overdose in September 2015 and it was found that Cathriona had taken a variety of prescription medications before her death. Following the post-mortem he Los Angeles County Coroner released details officially ruling the death a suicide in July 2016.
The couple had split up just days before the tragic event and Carrey had texted Cathriona the night before asking about a bottle of prescription painkillers that had gone missing. During the investigation, bottles of prescription medication were found next to Cathriona’s bed under the name of Arthur King.
In the lawsuit brought by Cathriona’s Mother Brigid Sweetman and her estranged husband Mark Burton they accuse Jim Carrey of providing the prescription drugs used by Cathriona to take her life. The lawsuit against Jim Carrey states: “prescription drugs… despite the fact that he knew full well that Ms. White
(a) was ill equipped to ingest and manage highly addictive prescription drugs outside the care of a licensed physician;
(b) was prone to depression; and
(c) had previously attempted to take her own life”.
She added: “The result that followed was predictable and foreseeable – Ms. White overdosed on the drugs on or about September 24, 2015, and died.” Mr Burton’s original complaint alleged that Jim had “wrongfully and illegally” obtained the drugs, and stated that the actor had attempted to “conceal and obfuscate his involvement and culpability in Miss White’s untimely and tragic death”.
Jim Carrey’s lawyer Raymond Boucher had requested the court to dismiss the lawsuit, but Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Deidre Hill set a trial date for the 26th April 2018, however the Judge did indicate that this was not the final decision on the matter pending time to consider both arguments. After the hearing, Jim’s Lawyer has been quoted as saying Mr Carrey loved Ms White dearly and so obviously it will be a very painful process for him.
